This pebble had a very rough exterior like large grit sandpaper, almost all marble pebbles have a rough appearance but are smooth to touch. So I wasn't even sure it was marble until I made the first cut. It turned out to be quite a fine and strong grey marble, why it should have had such a rough exterior is a mystery.

The shape of the pebble said 'scorpion' so that's what appeared. There are what appear to be some natural fault lines at the top of the pebble, unfortunately across the part that was to become the tail [sting], I therefore applied superglue to the fault lines as the work progressed, capillarity did the rest, completion of the tail was left to last.

As with my black spider sculpture the legs become progressively more delicate as they are finished, so the feet were completed very carefully and the whole piece bonded to its base before the final finishing and polishing.

Temporary wooden struts were bonded to the underside of the claws for support during the final finishing.
