In my mind's eye this was to have been just a big pair of human female lips, but as I have mentioned several times before, the end result is not always what I planned.

I actually started this piece several weeks before 'Blue Macaw', but when what was evolving was not quite what I had in mind, my enthusiasm waned for a short time.

Just lips without any other body part requires a leap of imagination that just wasn't there when I started this piece, instead I felt obliged [it seems], to include the adjacent features, cheeks, chin etc. So what evolved was the piece I originally called 'The Scream', but later re-named Jean d'Arc, which seemed more appropriate somehow.

Hollowing out the inside of the mouth with the limited tools I have available was not easy. Finding the burrs and any other sculpting tools here in the wilds of Turkey is difficult. It took a little longer with what I had to hand, but I got there in the end.

[The 'hollowing out' technique developed for this piece was taken to greater lengths in my later piece The Deep Sea Oracle]
